Athletics SPARk

To celebrate the staging of the 29th European Athletics Indoor Championships at Birmingham’s NIA, an interactive sports park is being staged in Centenary Square.

The Athletics SPARk will be open from 9am until 6pm on Thursday 1st until Saturday 3rd March and has been created so that young people from across Birmingham can be part of the Championships. The aim is to educate young people from the local community and engage them in fun activities relating to athletics.  It will be run by experienced coaches and technical specialists, has been sponsored by SPAR UK as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations throughout 2007.

Places are still available for anyone interested in taking part, any families wanting to get involved can drop in to the free event on any of the three days

The Athletics SPARk will include a performance zone with activities such as long jump, a sprint challenge, high jump and javelin throw, however it isn’t just about getting physical as youngsters will also be given a chance to consider technology, nutrition and sports science and look at athletics beyond elite performance, taking into account the role that technicians, scientists, physios, dieticians, coaches and volunteers all play.

In fact, as well as the performance zone, the Athletics SPARk includes a hydration and nutrition zone looking at an athletes fluid loss and replacement, what an athlete eats and which foods are healthy.  There will also be a technology zone where young people can compare the hi-tech equipment used by athletes today to that used by athletes in decades gone by.
